A Summerfield Man, David Sherman, was hit and killed on Church Street in Guilford County, North Carolina (NC) while he was out riding his bicycle. The driver fled the scene of the hit and run accident and was last seen heading north on Church Street near Highway 150.

Bicyle safety groups across North Carolina (NC) are hoping the tragic accident that claimed the life of David Sherman will serve as a wake up call for cyclists and drivers alike. Jeff Sovich of the cyclist advocacy group Bicycling in Greensboro said, “It's tragic and it's very sad and we hope that this will serve as a real reminder to all drivers to be safe out there.” Hanna Cockburn, a representative with the N.C. State Bicycle Committee, has this message to drivers and cyclists, “It can be frustrating to be behind a cyclist and we understand that but it's also our responsibility to slow down, look around and to effectively share the road.”

As drivers we can get impatient while driving behind a bicycle but it is important to remember that even a small accident can cost the cyclist their life. Drivers should keep a safe distance from bicycles and allow them the right away whenever possible. It is also important to be aware of your surroundings at all times, always keeping an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is still looking for the hit and run driver. The driver was in a silver Dodge Durango and anyone with information on the case is urged to call the police.
