Last Wednesday, just after 9:00 a.m. a six-car accident happened at the intersection of Kerr Avenue and Martin Luther King Parkway in Wilmington, North Carolina (N.C.) leaving one dead and 4 in critical condition. Police said, a white Subaru Outback with 4 passengers was speeding down MLK towards Wrightsville Beach. Witnesses say that the Subaru ran a red light and hit a white pick-up truck. Wilmington Police Department spokesperson, Lucy Crockett said, that one witness would even estimate the speed to have been in excess of 100 miles per hour.

The accident killed one of the passengers on the spot. Four others had to be immediately sent to the hospital as they were in critical condition. And four other cars were even hit by the said collision. There was no mention that the driver of the Subaru who clearly caused the accident was injured or in need of immediate medical attention. What’s worse is that the driver was not even driving his own car. According to the investigators, a Subaru Outback was reportedly stolen on October 3, 2009. Wilmington Police will not yet release the name of the person who was killed in the accident until they contact the family.

According to the facts and figures provided by the website safeteendriving.org, driving is the most dangerous daily activity we can undertake (source: www.brake.org.uk). A car crash which results from irresponsible driving is the #1 cause of death among Americans, especially teenagers, making it more than 68,000 teens over the last decade. In 2003, more than 6,000 teens died in car crashes in the United States, and more than 500,000 suffered life-altering injuries. These accidents can be avoided however, by using seat belts and making sure that the air bags work. Studies show that 60% of teens killed in car accidents are not wearing seat belts. Drivers, especially teen drivers should always be reminded of moderating the speed, and focusing their attention on driving alone.
