The Texting While Driving campaign was in full swing at Enloe High School in Raleigh, North Carolina (NC) earlier this week.

North Carolina Highway Patrol officers set up a traffic cone obstacle course and then used a golf cart to show teenagers the dangers of texting while driving. The teenagers were asked to complete the obstacle course in the golf cart while attempting to text on their cell phones. State troopers rode with the teens and pointed out safety tips through out the course.

In 2008, 140 teenagers were killed in car accidents on North Carolina (NC) highways and state troopers believe that number is largely due to teens driving while distracted by mobile devices such as Ipods and cell phones. Two state laws have been imposed recently to stop the number of teens driving on their cell phones. Currently, no one under the age of 18 is legally allowed to drive while talking on or texting on a cell phone. Starting December 1st, that law will increase and all drivers regardless of age will be prohibited from texting on a cell phone while driving.

To further the initiative the Texting While Driving campaign was founded by the North Carolina highway patrol. Enloe High School was one of the first of many stops for officers. They plan to canvass as many high schools as possible and educate teenagers on the dangers of distracted driving.

It looks like a lot of high school programs are doing this. Great to see teaching that will get across the dangers in the safest way. I was watching a CNN filming of one of these cone drives, it's amazing to see how effectively the message gets across.
