The FDA is urging parents to keep their children on attention deficit drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, despite new evidence that the stimulants can increase the risk of sudden death.

Recently there was a government-backed study that was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry suggesting there is a link between the use of stimulant drugs and sudden death in children and adolescents. These drugs commonly prescribed all the time by doctors already carry warnings about the risks of heart attack and stroke in children with underlying heart conditions.

In a surprise move, FDA experts say the small number of children evaluated in the new study limits its significance. The agency urges parents to discuss safety concerns with their doctor, but to keep children on the treatment. This study and its controversial stance clearly shows that there is a growing descent among the healthcare establishment in regards to what is and isn’t safe for your child. If you have a child with ADD I would highly encourage you to seek out several opinions and make a decision on what really is best for your child’s health.
