Imagine that you or your loved one has a common cold and you go to the local drug store to purchase an over-the-counter medication to help you through the illness. Now imagine the illness turning into something worse and permanent. There are three Zicam products that has been sold in drug stores all over the country that is linked to the loss of a persons sense of smell. On June 16, 2009 the Food and Drug Administration sent an advisory to consumers urging them to stop using the over-the-counter product Zicam. The three Zicam products listed in the advisory are:

Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kid Size (product was previously discontinued)

These products have been linked to instances where consumers have had permanent loss of the sense of smell. There has been over 130 reports of consumers who had lost their sense of smell either after one dose or after multiple doses. The FDA is telling people who have used these products and have lost their sense of smell to contact their doctor. Matrixx Initiatives is the maker of the Zicam products and they have been told by the FDA that they may not market these products without the approval of the FDA.

The information of a product recall or alert of potential problems with a product do not always make it to all consumers. We encourage you to forward this information to all of your family and friends in the event that they may still have some of these products in the medicine cabinets.
